I earned my first dive certification in 2015 and completed my Advanced Open Water (AOW) certification by late March 2025. Since joining the Taiwan Environmental Information Association in 2014 to investigate marine debris and advocate for policy changes, I’ve gone from picking up trash on beaches to traveling abroad for the cause. Unknowingly, the years of “not sticking to my proper job” are about to surpass one-third of my life. Having visited landfills in various counties and cities, I feel that not only does the end of science lead to metaphysics, but environmental issues do too.
I'm from Hualien,the only mermaid Instructor in east of Taiwan. Three years ago I was a mermaid performer,but now I'm a mermaid promoter. From sea to land, from performer to Instructor, I have been trying to get more people to know and love the mermaid sport.
Most reputable freediving instructor in the world, Hiroshi Ryu, was the men's champion of Taiwan's first national freediving competition in 2013 and Since 2023 served as the Officer of the AIDA Education Committee. With the highest number of students globally, he is also hailed as Taiwan's freediving evangelist.
Spent much of his time overseas, in the Unites States and New Zealand till his early 20s, he is a PADI Divemaster with over 1800 tanks experience and a Novice PADI TEC45 and Diver. In Taiwan's Green Island, I have been conducting long-term research on sea slugs, including species identification, behavior, and their habitat. This has earned recognition in the International Marine Geography Competition. I am Yang Zhefeng. I teach free diving in Lanyu for a living and also take photos of the big and small things happening on the seabed. I have been a diving instructor for World Vision, followed the spread of oil spills from a Barbados cargo ship, and participated in the traditional fishing of the Xiaolanyu Flying Fish Festival. Now I live in the intertidal zone with my wife and children, and I am an annual ring observer of sea turtle carapaces. Diving class is ecology class - we learn the physics taught by tides and the philosophy taught by corals.
